During the Second World War, German aircrew were issued standard flying clothing, but many pilots chose to supplement this with privately acquired garments sourced through civilian tailors and leather workshops. These jackets were purchased at the pilot’s own expense and worn alongside issued equipment, particularly for non combat flights, ground duties, travel, and off duty wear. Comfort, warmth, and personal fit were often prioritised over regulation uniformity, especially among experienced aircrew who spent long hours in and around aircraft.

This jacket reflects that practice. Its short blouson cut, insulated lining, and ribbed knit collar, cuffs, and waistband are consistent with flight jackets intended for cockpit use, where warmth and freedom of movement were essential. Unlike standardised issue garments, jackets of this type were produced in smaller numbers by civilian makers, resulting in subtle variations in materials and construction while retaining the practical requirements of aviation wear.

The jacket is constructed from full grain cowhide, selected for its durability and resistance to wear. The leather remains supple and structurally sound, showing even ageing across the surface with natural creasing and tonal variation consistent with long term use. The hide retains its integrity throughout, with no areas of collapse or thinning. The overall silhouette is compact and functional, designed to sit at the waist to reduce bulk when seated in an aircraft.

Inside, the jacket is lined with an insulated pile lining, providing warmth in cold conditions. The sleeves are lined in a smooth fabric to allow ease of movement when worn over layers. The front closure is fitted with a period appropriate metal zipper, and two angled front pockets are positioned for practical everyday use.

In terms of condition, the jacket shows age related wear consistent with use during its working life. There is a small repair beneath the inner arm lining and some discreet hand stitched mending, carried out earlier to maintain wearability. These repairs are secure and do not affect function. The jacket has been professionally cleaned and conditioned in house, leaving the leather nourished and well preserved while retaining its original surface character. The knit elements remain resilient, and all components function as intended.
