This German Kriegsmarine leather jacket is a rare surviving example of the type worn by U-Boat crews during the Second World War. Designed to endure the brutal environment of the North Atlantic, these jackets were shaped by long standing maritime tradition and the specific demands of submarine warfare, where exposure, cold, and constant humidity were part of daily life.

The design draws directly from earlier German naval leatherwear issued during the First World War under the Kaiserliche Marine. While earlier examples were typically produced in black leather, the Kriegsmarine introduced lighter grey leather during the early 1940s, a colour that became closely associated with U-Boat crews and later earned them the nickname the Grey Wolves. This jacket reflects that evolution, retaining the functional, uncompromising character of its predecessors while adapting to modern naval conditions.

Cut in a double breasted, three quarter length format, this style was issued to deck personnel and bridge crews, where protection from freezing spray and high winds was essential. The broad collar and overlapping front provided additional insulation, while the heavy leather construction acted as a natural barrier against the elements. Over time, the leather has softened and developed a deep, uneven patina, with visible surface chapping and abrasion across the sleeves, body panels, and high contact areas. This wear is consistent with prolonged service use and exposure rather than later cosmetic ageing, and it remains even and honest throughout.

Internally, the jacket retains its original sleeveless wool lining, a practical choice for warmth without restricting movement in confined spaces. Original elasticated storm cuffs remain present inside the sleeves, designed to prevent cold air from entering during exposed duties. The lining shows age related wear, including a small area of marking near the lower back, in keeping with long term naval service.

The original buttons were replaced at some point during the jacket’s service life, a common and period correct repair seen on working Kriegsmarine garments. Replacement buttons have been sourced and will be fitted prior to dispatch. These are exact pattern and finish matches to the original Kriegsmarine buttons and have been chosen to maintain the correct appearance and character of the jacket. They are modern replacements rather than period pieces. The buttons are due to arrive on the 3rd of February and will be professionally attached before the jacket is sent.

Stitching remains sound throughout, with no evidence of modern reconstruction or excessive intervention. The leather remains supple, intact, and fully wearable.

This jacket has been professionally cleaned and carefully conditioned to preserve the integrity of the materials while retaining the visual record of its service history. It has been preserved rather than over restored, maintaining the authenticity, material character, and presence expected of a genuine naval issue piece.

A scarce and historically significant example of German U-Boat leatherwear, offered in preserved, service worn condition, and suited to serious collectors or those seeking an uncompromising Second World War garment.
