Produced in the early to mid 1940s, this German despatch rider jacket by Lebesto Qualität belongs to the class of privately supplied leather garments worn by military couriers operating beyond the limits of standard issue. These jackets were designed for men required to travel fast and often alone, carrying orders across exposed terrain where protection, durability and freedom of movement were critical. The extended cut, asymmetric fastening and heavy leather construction align closely with documented despatch rider equipment used during the latter years of the war.

The horsehide is heavyweight and densely grained, displaying the strength and abrasion resistance associated with wartime German production. Finished in an uncommon deep green tone, it departs from the more typical black and brown examples of the period and reflects early dye processes that have matured naturally over time. The surface shows pronounced grain, creasing and tonal depth, with a rich patina developed through decades of use rather than artificial ageing. Despite its age, the hide retains excellent structure and integrity throughout.

The cut is functional and purposeful. The asymmetric zip front provides added protection against wind while riding, while the longer body length offers coverage without restricting movement. Flap pockets and hand-warmer pockets are positioned for practicality, button tab cuffs allow adjustment, and reinforced rear seams speak to the precision and durability expected of German wartime tailoring.

Inside, the original moleskin lining remains present and serviceable. Chosen for its warmth and resilience, it confirms this jacket as a working garment rather than a civilian fashion piece. The original Lebesto Qualität label is intact, firmly placing the jacket within wartime production. All hardware functions correctly, with the main zipper pull replaced during the jacket’s working life, a pragmatic repair consistent with continued use rather than later restoration.

Professionally cleaned and conditioned in house using specialist workshop methods, the leather is supple, strong and full of natural character. Stitching, seams and structural components are all sound. Overall condition is very good vintage, with honest age-related wear and no structural issues.
