Built during the 1940s, this German motorcycle leather jacket sits firmly within the category of privately acquired dispatch rider garments worn alongside issued equipment. Jackets of this type were favoured for motorcycle use due to their wind resistance, durability, and secure fit, offering protection that standard uniform pieces could not. Intended for hard use rather than display, they were designed to perform in demanding conditions while maintaining a sharp, functional silhouette.
The jacket is cut from heavy black horsehide, a material widely chosen for motorcycle wear due to its density and abrasion resistance. Over time, the hide has softened while retaining its structure, developing a deep, authentic patina with natural creasing and tonal variation throughout. The leather remains strong and supple, showing honest wear consistent with age and service rather than weakness or fatigue.
Design details point clearly toward motorcycle use. The asymmetric single-track front closure offers improved wind protection when riding, while the angled pocket layout allows for easy access when seated. Original OPTI zippers remain fitted throughout, with the exception of the left sleeve zip, which has been professionally replaced in keeping with the period and function. The waist is fitted with original adjustable hardware, allowing the jacket to be drawn in for stability and warmth on the bike.
Inside, the jacket is lined in moleskin, chosen for its durability and insulating properties. This lining remains intact and serviceable, providing comfort without compromising authenticity. Stitching and seams throughout are sound, and the jacket retains its intended shape and balance.
Cleaned and conditioned in house using specialist workshop methods, the jacket has been preserved rather than altered. The leather has been nourished to restore flexibility while retaining its original surface character, ensuring it remains wearable while respecting its history.
In very good vintage condition for its age. The horsehide remains supple and structurally sound, with surface wear, creasing, and patina consistent with long-term use. The professionally replaced left sleeve zip is functional and discreet. All remaining original hardware operates as intended. The moleskin lining is intact and serviceable, with light age-related wear only. No rips, tears, or structural issues present.
