This German leather trench coat reflects the disciplined construction and material standards associated with late interwar and early wartime military tailoring. Produced in Germany during the late 1930s to early 1940s, it belongs to a period when privately commissioned garments were made to a higher material and tailoring specification than standard issue pieces, favouring durability, structure and restraint over ornament.

Cut long through the body and belted at the waist, the silhouette is purposeful and controlled. The proportions sit close to the frame while allowing natural movement, engineered for exposed conditions rather than display. A structured shoulder line and defined waist create a composed and unmistakably period profile.

Constructed from dense pebbled goatskin, the leather is of exceptional quality. The hide remains thick and structured through the body panels, while the sleeves display beautifully developed natural grain characteristic of high-grade goatskin that has aged correctly rather than degraded. Despite its substance, the leather retains notable pliability, particularly through the arms, with a responsive and supple hand that speaks to both the original tanning and careful long-term preservation. The surface shows a rich, even patina with subtle tonal depth developed through decades of natural ageing. Stitching throughout is precise and consistent, reinforcing the structural integrity of the garment.

Internally, the coat is lined in satin, adding warmth and weight in keeping with its utilitarian intent. An internal breast pocket provides practical storage. The exterior features an asymmetrical chest pocket secured with a Ruhr-marked metal zip, consistent with quality German hardware of the period.

The waist is defined by a full external belt secured with period German-marked steel hardware, maintaining a clean and balanced line through the body. The cuffs are finished with fixed buckle detailing consistent with officer-style construction of the era, functioning as structural reinforcement rather than adjustment. A structured rear yoke strengthens the shoulder line, while a split rear vent allows ease of movement and can be secured closed with a button fastening when required. The high fastening collar offers additional protection in adverse conditions. Leather-covered buttons at the collar, cuffs and rear vent complete the construction with restrained functional precision.

The coat has been professionally cleaned and carefully reconditioned in our workshop to restore suppleness while preserving the original surface character and patina. No cosmetic refinishing or artificial enhancement has been undertaken. The leather remains strong and structurally sound throughout, with excellent thickness retained across all panels. There is natural creasing and surface character consistent with age, but no thinning or weakness. The lining is clean and well preserved. All zips, buckles, buttons and fastenings remain secure and fully functional. It presents as a rare and well preserved example of German military leather outerwear from the late interwar and early wartime era.
