Produced for the Swedish Army during the first half of the twentieth century, the M1909 parka was designed as a cold-weather outer garment intended for prolonged use in severe winter conditions. Sweden’s climate required clothing that prioritised insulation, wind protection, and durability, and the M1909 became a long-serving standard for military issue. Coats of this type were manufactured to government specification by regional suppliers, including makers based in Malung, a centre of Swedish leather and shearling production.
The parka is constructed with a densely woven cotton canvas outer shell, selected for its durability and resistance to wind and moisture. The shell retains its weight and structure, providing effective protection in exposed conditions. The interior is fully lined with sheepskin, including a large shearling collar designed to be worn raised for maximum coverage in cold weather. The lining remains full and insulating, maintaining its original purpose as a cold-weather garment.
The design is functional and deliberate, with a button-front closure and reinforced storm placket to reduce wind ingress. Large bellows pockets with buttoned flaps provide practical storage while wearing gloves. Adjustable cuffs and an internal drawstring waist allow the fit to be regulated for layering and movement. The overall cut is generous, reflecting its intended use over uniforms and winter clothing.
This example has been preserved with care. The cotton shell has been dry cleaned and reproofed in house, restoring its weather resistance while retaining the original fabric character and drape. The sheepskin lining is in very good condition, remaining dense and resilient. A small natural red mark from the hide is present on the interior lining, along with a faint mark near the second button and a light mark on the upper left arm. These are minor and consistent with age and use. All buttons are secure, seams are strong, and the structure remains sound.
Overall condition is very good vintage, with wear appropriate to a military garment designed for extended service rather than display.
