A Stewart leather rider jacket produced in Italy by Scettro during the late 1980s, cut in the classic Windward and Hercules configuration that defined mid century rider and aviation flight jackets. This example represents a later european interpretation of that established pattern, retaining the core design language while introducing a softer, more wearable execution.
The silhouette follows the traditional waist length rider cut, sitting high on the body with a clean, balanced profile. The front is defined by angled chest zip pockets, a key identifying feature of the Windward style, combined with a straightforward zip closure and structured collar. A buttoned throat latch is present, reinforcing the functional rider influence seen in earlier American and British examples.
Constructed from soft, supple full grained cowhide, the leather differs noticeably from mid century American counterparts. The hide has a natural drape and flexibility, with an even grain pattern across the panels. It has worn in gradually, showing light creasing and surface character consistent with age, without any loss of strength or stability. This reflects Italian production of the period, favouring comfort and movement over the heavier, more rigid hides used in earlier decades.
Lower hand pockets are set in a more utilitarian configuration, complementing the sharper chest pocket layout. The waistband provides structure without restricting movement, maintaining the jacket’s clean line when worn. Internally, the jacket is finished with a quilted lining featuring Stewart script embroidery, consistent with Scettro production and adding clear brand identity without excess.
Hardware throughout is correct to the period and fully functional. The front zip and pocket zips operate smoothly and remain structurally sound.
This is not an original 1950s piece, but a faithful late twentieth century interpretation produced within a different manufacturing context. The Windward style is preserved in its essential form, while the materials and handling reflect a more refined Italian approach.
Condition and Preservation
The jacket presents in very good overall condition for its age.
The leather remains supple, stable and evenly toned, with natural wear consistent with use. There are no signs of cracking, dryness or structural weakness. All panels retain integrity. Hardware is complete and functions as intended. The lining is clean and well preserved.
The garment has been carefully cleaned and conditioned in our workshop to maintain suppleness and protect the surface. No structural restoration was required.
