The Schott 681 single rider stands as one of the most refined expressions of American motorcycle jacket design. Clean, purposeful and unmistakably built for the road, it strips away the excess of the classic double rider in favour of a streamlined silhouette that sits close to the body and moves naturally with the rider.

This example dates to 1997 and was produced at the Perth Amboy factory by Schott NYC specifically for the Japanese export market, where the 681 gained a reputation for its sharp tailoring and premium materials. Jackets produced for Japan were cut slimmer and more tapered than many domestic American models, giving them a particularly balanced and flattering fit.

The jacket is constructed from heavyweight cowhide with the dense, resilient character Schott is known for. The leather has developed a natural softness through wear while still retaining the structure and durability expected of a serious motorcycle jacket. The grain across the hide is rich and consistent, giving the jacket depth while remaining clean and well preserved.

The design follows the classic single rider configuration. A straight front zipper runs cleanly through the body to a simple turn down collar, creating a minimal and practical profile originally intended for riding. The jacket features open hand warmer pockets and a horizontal zipped chest pocket with a traditional ring pull, while the robust Schott branded hardware used during this period reinforces the jacket’s solid construction. Adjustable side buckle straps allow the waist to be shaped for a closer fit.

Inside, the jacket is lined with the distinctive red and brown plaid flannel lining used on this model during the 1990s, providing warmth while maintaining the understated utilitarian aesthetic associated with late twentieth century American riding jackets.

The jacket has been professionally cleaned and conditioned in preparation for sale to ensure the leather remains supple and well presented while preserving its original character.

Condition is very good for its age. The leather remains strong and well maintained with only light signs of wear. The interior lining is very clean and in very good condition, and all hardware and zippers function smoothly.

A well preserved example of one of Schott’s most respected single rider designs, produced during the model’s peak popularity in Japan.
