Produced in the early to mid 1940s, this German despatch rider jacket by Lebesto Qualität is a surviving example of wartime leatherwear designed for men operating under extreme conditions. These jackets were worn by military couriers responsible for carrying orders and communications across exposed terrain, where speed, protection and resilience were essential. Cut from heavyweight horsehide and finished in an uncommon deep green tone, it stands apart from the more typical black and brown jackets of the period.

The horsehide is dense, full grained and highly durable, showing the strength associated with German wartime production. Over time, the finish has matured into a rich, even patina with natural creasing and tonal depth throughout. This character is the result of age and use rather than artificial distressing. The leather remains structurally sound, retaining its strength and shape across the body and sleeves.

The design is purposeful and uncompromising. An asymmetric zip front provides additional protection while riding, complemented by an extended body length that offers coverage without restricting movement. Flap pockets and handwarmer pockets are positioned for practicality, while button tab cuffs and reinforced rear seams reflect the precision and durability of period construction. Inside, the original Lebesto Qualität label remains intact, confirming both origin and wartime manufacture.

The original moleskin lining remains present and serviceable. Selected originally for its warmth and resilience, it reinforces the jacket’s role as a working garment rather than a civilian fashion piece. All hardware functions correctly, with the main zipper pull replaced during the jacket’s working life, a practical repair consistent with continued use rather than later cosmetic restoration.

Professionally cleaned and conditioned in house using specialist workshop methods, the leather is supple, strong and rich in natural character. Stitching, seams and structural components are all sound. Overall condition is very good vintage, with age-related wear consistent with use and no structural issues.
