In the years following the Second World War, German motorcycle clothing continued to draw heavily from wartime and pre-war riding equipment. Jackets produced during the late 1940s and early 1950s retained the same emphasis on protection, durability, and controlled fit, shaped by the practical requirements of dispatch riders and civilian motorcyclists alike. This Haelson jacket belongs to that period of continuity, where design was informed by experience rather than fashion.

Produced in Wilhelmshaven by Haelson Lederbekleidung, the jacket reflects the disciplined approach taken by West German makers during the early reconstruction years. The pattern is structured and deliberate, designed to sit correctly on the body and maintain stability when worn on the motorcycle. Panel layout, sleeve articulation, and waist shaping are all functional decisions rather than decorative ones.

The jacket is cut from mid weight cowhide that remains supple and structurally sound throughout. The leather has developed a settled patina over time, with tonal variation that moves between olive grey and brown depending on light and wear. Creasing is even and consistent with age, with no areas of thinning, weakness, or collapse. The hide retains sufficient density to hold its shape while remaining comfortable when worn.

Construction details remain intact and correctly proportioned. The jacket retains four brass Ries zippers with ring pulls, all of which have been serviced to ensure reliable operation. Quilted sleeve panels provide reinforcement and flexibility, while the belted waist allows the fit to be adjusted without disturbing the jacket’s balance. Red leather lattice epaulettes with button fastening remain present and original to the jacket.

Inside, the jacket retains its original interior construction, combining satin and cotton twill lining materials typical of the period. The lining remains clean, intact, and serviceable, showing light wear consistent with long term use. The original Haelson label is present. Evidence of a removed front badge can be seen, a detail commonly encountered on working motorcycle jackets of this era.

The jacket has been professionally cleaned and conditioned using specialist processes appropriate for heritage leather. This has ensured the hide remains flexible and wearable while preserving its original surface character. The main front zipper has been replaced at some point with a period appropriate YKK zip to maintain function. All Ries pocket zips remain original.

Condition is very good vintage. The leather is strong, flexible, and well preserved, with natural creasing and patina consistent with age. Stitching and seams are secure throughout. All hardware functions as intended. Any wear present is cosmetic and reflects use rather than deterioration.

Overall, this is a sound and authentic example of early post war West German motorcycle clothing, retaining its original materials, construction, and character. It remains a wearable garment with integrity, suitable for careful use or inclusion in a focused collection.
