A genuine Irvin sheepskin flying jacket by Aviation Leathercraft, produced under the Irvin name following its reintroduction in the late 20th century by Simon Green. This example carries the woven brown interior label, consistent with later production, most likely dating to the late 1980s to early 1990s.
The Irvin jacket was first introduced in 1931 as a solution to the extreme conditions faced by RAF pilots at altitude. Its construction remains one of the most effective examples of functional outerwear design, built to retain warmth while allowing necessary movement within confined cockpits. That pattern continues here, unchanged in its intent.
The outer sheepskin has developed a deep, natural surface, with clear tonal variation across the panels. Creasing and softening are visible through the body and sleeves, with light marking consistent with wear over time. The hide has not been overworked or artificially treated. What remains is natural character, developed through use.
Construction follows the classic multi-panel Irvin pattern, with seams bound in dark brown cowhide and overlock stitched throughout. The front zip is a YKK brass closure, running on the characteristic slight angle to secure firmly at the neck. The wide collar can be worn open or raised and fastened with the D-ring throat strap. Sleeves are finished with zipped cuffs, and the waist retains its original belt with IRVIN-stamped brass buckle.
The shearling lining remains dense and even, carrying the warm honey tone typical of Aviation Leathercraft production. The wool retains its bulk and insulating quality throughout.
The jacket has been professionally cleaned and conditioned and remains in excellent condition for its age. The sheepskin is supple, the structure is sound, and all hardware operates as intended. This is a functional garment with clear history, not something over-restored or altered beyond use.
