Vintage Chipie Big Horns Mountain Padded Leather Puffer Jacket

The construction is deliberately substantial. Broad padded sections divide the body, with generously insulated sleeves and a high stand collar designed to close closely around the neck. The short body and broad shoulders exaggerate the volume further, giving the jacket the distinctive cold-weather silhouette suggested by its Big Horns Mountain identity.

The front is remarkably restrained. A heavy brass-toned YKK zipper runs from hem to collar, secured at the neck by an original Chipie-branded press stud, while two angled leather-welt hand-warmer pockets provide the only interruption to the padded front. Across the back, a shaped western-style shoulder yoke sits above broad leather panels, introducing an American outdoor influence without unnecessary decoration.

Inside, the original brown lining remains in place, carrying the wonderfully graphic woven Chipie Big Horns Mountain label with its mountain peaks, pine trees and original Size M tab. It is a small but important detail, tying the unusual construction directly to Chipie's mountain and outdoor-inspired range.

The leather is exceptionally soft and pliable, with decades of wear producing a beautiful natural patina. Deep espresso brown moves into warmer chestnut across the shoulders, upper back, sleeves and raised seams, while protected areas retain their darker original tone. Grain has opened particularly well through the shoulders and arms, accompanied by deep natural creasing from movement. Despite the jacket's substantial padded construction, the hide remains supple throughout, giving it the relaxed, broken-in character that makes this example particularly compelling.

Condition & Restoration

Excellent vintage condition. The leather remains exceptionally soft, pliable and structurally sound throughout, with no cracking or damage to the hide. The surface wear is entirely consistent with age and has developed into the rich natural patina described above.

The original brown lining remains intact and well preserved, together with the original Chipie Big Horns Mountain label.

The jacket has been specialist leather cleaned and conditioned in-house, with care taken to preserve its established character. The YKK main zipper has been refurbished, cleaned, waxed and polished and operates smoothly. The Chipie-branded press stud and remaining hardware have also been carefully cleaned.
