Banana Republic leather rider jacket produced during the 1990s, cut in a classic mid century inspired rider configuration that draws from earlier American motorcycle jacket design. This example reflects a later interpretation of that established pattern, retaining the essential proportions while presenting a more wearable, material-led execution.
The silhouette follows a traditional rider cut, sitting just below the waistline with a clean, balanced profile. The front is defined by a straightforward zip closure with angled hand pockets, maintaining a functional layout consistent with classic rider jackets. The overall shape is controlled and practical, allowing the form and material to carry the piece.
Constructed from firm, full grained cowhide with a naturally burnished finish, the leather has a strong, structured handle with a solid, weighty feel. It carries a beautiful natural patina, with a rich, developed tone and subtle variation across the panels that reflect genuine use over time. The grain is consistent and pronounced throughout, with natural creasing adding depth while the hide retains its integrity and shape.
The jacket has a substantial feel in hand, weighing approximately 2.2kg, reflecting the quality and density of the hide. The waistband provides structure, allowing the jacket to sit cleanly when worn. Panel construction is straightforward and well executed, with a strong shoulder and even distribution across the body.
Internally, the jacket is lined in cotton, offering a breathable and practical finish in keeping with its utilitarian rider design. The lining sits cleanly within the garment and supports the structure without unnecessary bulk.
Hardware throughout is correct to the period and fully functional. The front zip operates smoothly and sits properly within the jacket.
This is not an original mid century piece, but a later twentieth century interpretation produced within a different manufacturing context. The rider style is preserved in its essential form, while the materials and handling reflect a more accessible and wearable approach.
Condition and Preservation
The jacket presents in excellent overall vintage condition.
The leather remains firm, stable and evenly toned, with natural wear consistent with use. The burnished finish and developed patina sit evenly across the hide, giving the jacket a well established character without any loss of integrity. There are no signs of cracking, dryness or structural weakness. All panels retain integrity.
Hardware is complete and functions as intended. The cotton lining is clean, intact and well preserved.
The garment has been carefully cleaned and conditioned in our workshop to maintain the balance of the leather and protect the surface. No structural restoration was required.
