A 1990s Banana Republic leather jacket in deep black cowhide, made in the decade after the brand's safari years, when it was still making leather outerwear with a heritage feel. The pattern looks back to the American sports and motorcycle jackets of the 1930s and 40s: short in the body, cleanly squared through the shoulder, and finished with the details that made those originals so enduring.

Banana Republic began in 1978 as the Banana Republic Travel and Safari Clothing Company, founded in the San Francisco Bay Area by Mel and Patricia Ziegler. It started by selling vintage military surplus, then made its own copies of the best sellers, and its hand-drawn catalogues were full of flight jackets. By the mid-1980s it was selling leather flight jackets of its own, one of them made by Golden Bear Leather of San Francisco. Gap bought the company in 1983, the Zieglers left in 1988, and the safari idea was gone by 1990. Through the 1990s it grew into a chain of more than 200 stores. A black cowhide sports jacket of this kind belongs to that later chapter, shaped by the American patterns the brand had spent its early years copying.

The shirt-style collar is the first thing you notice. It is broad, soft and well proportioned, and it lies flat and balanced when worn open over a heavy knit, just as it sits snug when zipped up against the wind. Below it, a full length metal zip runs cleanly to the hem, with a Banana Republic branded pull. A pair of angled welt pockets sit low on the front, each edged in narrow leather jetting and set at a natural angle for the hands. At the back, a single centre seam divides the panel, and a buckled tab at either side of the waistband lets the fit be drawn in. These side adjusters were once common on good sports jackets and are now rarely seen.

The leather is the real story here. It is full grain cowhide with a pronounced, open grain and a deep black finish that catches the light with a soft lustre rather than a shine. Years of honest wear have creased the elbows, cuffs and waistband into the kind of texture that cannot be manufactured. In hand it has a satisfying weight, approximately 1.9kg, yet it sits easily on the frame, settling to the shape of the body and moving with the wearer rather than against him.

The interior is as considered as the exterior. The body is lined in soft brushed cotton, warm against a shirt, while the sleeves are lined in smooth nylon and acetate so the jacket slips on easily over a flannel shirt or a heavy knit. A leather hanging loop sits at the collar, above the Banana Republic label stitched onto a zigzag-edged leather patch.

This is not an original mid century piece, but a later twentieth century interpretation of a classic American pattern. Its quality is in the hide, the details and the way it wears.

Condition and Preservation

Very good vintage condition.

The leather is supple, stable and evenly toned, with creasing and light wear that are the honest marks of use. There is no cracking, dryness or weakness anywhere in the hide, and all seams and panels are sound. The zip runs freely and both original buckles are complete and adjustable. The inner lining shows some minor fading and wear, which is typical of a vintage jacket and does not affect how it wears. The linings are whole, with no tears or holes.

The jacket has been specialist leather cleaned and conditioned in our workshop, restoring the depth of the black and protecting the surface for the years ahead. No structural restoration was required.
