Vintage Avirex Classics B-3 Sheepskin Bomber Jacket USA

Few garments carry the unmistakable presence of the B-3 flying jacket. Originally designed to protect American aircrew operating in the freezing conditions of high altitude flight, the pattern remains one of the most recognisable and enduring designs in aviation clothing.

This example comes from Avirex Classics, a line produced in the United States during the late 1980s to early 1990s when the company was reintroducing traditional American flight jacket designs for civilian wear. While maintaining the unmistakable B-3 silhouette, jackets from this period were often made using slightly more wearable sheepskin, making them practical for everyday use while retaining the character of the original design.

The jacket is constructed from mid weight sheepskin with a rich brown leather exterior that shows natural grain and variation across the hide. Inside, the dense cream shearling lining provides the warmth and insulation that made the B-3 one of the most effective cold weather flight jackets ever developed.

The large shearling collar features the traditional dual throat latch straps secured by Avirex stamped brass buckles, allowing the collar to be fastened across the neck in colder weather. Angled hand warmer pockets are set neatly into the body of the jacket and waist adjustment straps allow the silhouette to be shaped slightly when worn.

Inside, the jacket retains the original Avirex Classics label and Made in USA tag beneath the collar.

The jacket has been professionally cleaned and carefully prepared in our workshop, with the sheepskin lightly nourished using our sheepskin workshop conditioner to help maintain the suppleness of the leather while preserving its natural character.

Condition is very good overall. The sheepskin remains healthy and supple and the shearling lining is clean, dense and warm throughout. The jacket presents as a well preserved vintage example.
