Vintage 1990s Chevignon Buffalo Leather Trucker Jacket

Chosen for its exceptional character and beautifully developed patina, this vintage Chevignon Original Leather jacket is a particularly handsome example of the leather outerwear for which the French brand became known during the late twentieth century.

Dating from the 1990s, the jacket is constructed from mid-weight 100% buffalo leather, giving it a pleasing balance of structure and wearability. Decades of genuine wear have transformed the original dark brown surface into deep chocolate and rich brown tones, with warmer tobacco colouring developing naturally around the sleeves, seams, cuffs and other high-contact areas. Pronounced buffalo grain, fine creasing and subtle variation between individual panels give the leather a depth and individuality that artificial distressing simply cannot reproduce.

Chevignon was founded in France in 1979 by Guy Azoulay and built much of its identity around a distinctly European interpretation of vintage Americana. Aviation clothing, workwear, motorcycles, automobiles and collegiate style became central to the brand's visual language, with leather jackets particularly associated with Chevignon throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Drawing on the wider fascination with post-war American culture, from the leather jackets associated with figures such as James Dean and Steve McQueen to the motorcycle, automotive and garage culture of the 1950s and 1960s, Chevignon reinterpreted familiar American references through a distinctly French fashion perspective.

This jacket captures that approach particularly well. Its silhouette sits somewhere between an American garage jacket, leather trucker and civilian flying jacket, combining elements from several traditions while retaining a distinctive identity of its own.

A substantial point collar gives the jacket a clean, purposeful profile above the heavy metal front zip, which retains its leather pull. A horizontal zipped chest pocket provides secure storage, while two angled hand pockets sit naturally at the waist, keeping the front practical and uncluttered.

Across the back, a broad shoulder yoke introduces a strong trucker and workwear influence before meeting the large panels below, divided by a vertical centre seam. Button-adjustable leather tabs at either side of the waist provide a degree of adjustment to the silhouette, while buttoned leather cuffs create a cleaner, more structured finish than the knitted ribbing of a conventional bomber jacket.

Inside, the body is lined in brown 100% cotton with quilted sections, leather reinforcement and multiple utility pockets, including a zipped internal pocket for secure storage.

The most distinctive interior detail is the large leather “Auto Body Custom Garage Service – Chevignon Inc. – 1957” patch. Its automotive graphics directly express the American garage imagery running through the design. The 1957 marking forms part of Chevignon's nostalgic branding and is not the manufacture date of the jacket.

The original Chevignon Original Leather branding, composition label and size M tab are all retained.

The result is a jacket in which Chevignon's fascination with American workwear and automotive culture has been complemented by decades of genuine use. Its history is now genuinely written into the hide.

Condition & Preservation

Very good vintage condition. The buffalo leather remains strong, supple and structurally sound, with age-related surface wear consistent with genuine use.

The jacket has been specialist leather cleaned and conditioned in-house using our neutral leather conditioner. The main front, chest and internal zips have also been carefully refurbished, polished and lubricated to support smooth operation while retaining their original vintage appearance.

No recolouring or artificial refinishing has been undertaken. The naturally developed surface has deliberately been left intact.

The cotton interior remains well presented, and the buttoned cuffs and adjustable waist tabs remain present and in good order.
