This 1980s A-2 by Schott NYC reflects a period when American flight jackets were built with substance rather than nostalgia. Produced as a civilian interpretation of the wartime pattern, the jacket follows the established A-2 configuration while retaining the material weight and structural integrity associated with Schott’s leather production during this era.
Constructed from full grain black naked cowhide, the hide remains firm and well structured. Unlike heavily corrected finishes, naked cowhide from this period was left open to develop character through wear. This example shows measured surface creasing and light tonal variation consistent with age, without excessive abrasion or cosmetic overworking. The leather maintains both flexibility and strength.
The jacket is cut in the traditional waist-length A-2 form with epaulettes, twin flap pockets, ribbed wool waistband and cuffs, and a clean single-panel back. The proportions are balanced and functional, adhering closely to the original military-derived silhouette. Stitching throughout is consistent and secure, reflecting durable mid-century influenced construction rather than fashion reinterpretation.
Internally, the original Schott lining remains present and intact. The waistband and cuffs have been professionally refurbished to restore elasticity while preserving the jacket’s original stance. Hardware remains period correct and operates smoothly.
Condition is honest and appropriate to age. The leather displays natural creasing and light wear in high-contact areas. There are no structural weaknesses, and seams remain strong. The jacket presents as a sound, well-preserved example rather than a heavily distressed piece.
It has been specialist leather cleaned and carefully conditioned in house using a preservation-led approach. No unnecessary cosmetic alteration has been undertaken. The intention has been to maintain structural integrity while respecting the surface character developed over time.
A solid and authentic example of Schott’s 1980s A-2 production, defined by material integrity and restrained ageing rather than exaggeration.
