Dating to the mid-1980s, this Schott 684SM is a particularly characterful example of the American maker's A-2-inspired civilian flight jacket. Made in the USA and tagged Size 48, it combines heavyweight steerhide construction with the practical proportions and detailing that made Schott's civilian flight jackets enduring classics.

The 684SM draws heavily on the traditional American A-2 flight jacket without being a military-issued garment. Schott adapted the familiar aviation silhouette into a substantial civilian leather jacket, retaining many of the details associated with the classic form while giving it the robust construction expected from the New York manufacturer.

A broad leather turn-down collar sits above the central front zipper and leather storm flap, with shoulder epaulettes completing the upper profile. Two large patch pockets feature shaped snap-fastened flaps together with side-entry hand-warmer access, adding everyday practicality without disrupting the traditional flight-jacket appearance.

Knitted cuffs and a deep knitted waistband draw the jacket closely around the wrists and body. At the rear, a horizontal leather reinforcement panel runs across the lower section, adding structure to the broad steerhide back. Schott-branded hardware completes the construction, including the substantial main zipper with its SCHOTT USA marked puller.

What distinguishes this particular 684SM is the extraordinary surface that has developed across its steerhide.

Approximately four decades of genuine wear have transformed what was once a much more uniform dark brown jacket. The steerhide has developed extensive tobacco-brown tones alongside areas of warmer brown and lighter tan, particularly across the shoulders, sleeves, seams, pockets and exposed edges.

The variation is remarkably organic. Pronounced grain and creasing run through the sleeves, while rubbing, fine scratches and softened edges record years of movement and use. Individual panels have aged at different rates, producing a depth and complexity across the garment that could only develop through prolonged wear.

Despite its dramatic appearance, the steerhide remains strong, substantial and structurally sound. This contrast is what makes the jacket particularly compelling. It carries approximately forty years of visible history while retaining the reassuring weight and integrity of its Schott construction.

Following specialist work in our workshop, this mid-1980s 684SM is ready for continued wear while retaining the character it has accumulated over the decades. It is an exceptional example of how heavyweight steerhide can age, and a Schott whose individual history is immediately visible in the leather.

Condition & Restoration

Very good vintage condition.

The heavyweight steerhide remains strong, substantial and structurally sound. Extensive naturally developed patina is present throughout, including surface rubbing, scratches, pronounced grain, creasing, softened edges and considerable tonal variation consistent with approximately four decades of genuine wear.

The jacket has been specialist cleaned and conditioned in-house, with particular care taken to preserve the established character of the leather.

The Schott zipper has been refurbished, cleaned, waxed and polished and operates smoothly. The remaining hardware has also been carefully cleaned. The knitted cuffs and waistband have been refurbished and remain strong and serviceable.

The brown lining is exceptionally well preserved and remains in excellent condition with no rips or tears.
