The Schott 684SM is a substantial American-made leather flight jacket from the brand's A-2 inspired civilian range, combining classic aviation styling with the heavier steerhide construction associated with vintage Schott flight jackets.
Dating from the 1980s, this example is made in the USA from black steerhide. The leather has matured particularly well, remaining strong and supple while developing natural grain, creasing, light surface marks and the subtle character that comes through genuine age and wear.
The 684SM follows the familiar short flight-jacket silhouette, with a broad leather collar, shoulder epaulettes and knitted cuffs and waistband. Two substantial patch pockets sit across the lower front, each with a shaped snap-fastened flap and additional side-entry access. Original Schott-branded snap hardware remains throughout.
A leather storm flap covers the main zipper when closed, giving the front a clean, purposeful appearance. Inside, the original black Schott-logo lining is exceptionally well preserved, while the internal pocket retains its original identification label with the 684SM model reference and Size 46 marking.
The 684SM forms part of Schott's long-running family of civilian flight jackets influenced by American military aviation clothing. Its substantial steerhide construction, practical pocket configuration and knitted trim give it a recognisable A-2 influence while retaining the distinctive construction and character of a Schott jacket.
This example has retained the character accumulated through decades of use. Light marks, grain and hardware patina remain visible, while the underlying steerhide, lining and knitted components have survived extremely well. The result is a highly wearable vintage Schott with the individuality and presence expected from an original 1980s leather flight jacket.
Condition & Preservation
Very good vintage condition, with genuine age-developed character consistent with a 1980s Schott jacket. The black steerhide remains strong and supple throughout, retaining natural grain and creasing with some light surface scratches and marks from use, as shown in the photographs. These are relatively minor and form part of the established character of the jacket.
Several of the original Schott-branded snaps show light age-related oxidation. These have been carefully cleaned to remove the majority of the surface corrosion, with some minor patina remaining. The original Schott-logo lining is exceptionally well preserved with no rips or tears.
The left knitted cuff has received a small, discreet stitch repair which is difficult to notice unless inspected closely. The original knitted cuffs and waistband remain strong, retain excellent elasticity and have been carefully refurbished.
The jacket has been specialist leather cleaned and conditioned in-house in our workshop. Accumulated soiling has been carefully removed from the leather, cuffs and waistband before the steerhide was conditioned to restore nourishment and flexibility while preserving its established surface character. The original zipper has also been refurbished, waxed and polished.
