There is a clarity to this piece that sets it apart immediately. Cut in the 1980s, it follows the classic café racer line with restraint and intent, allowing proportion and material to define the jacket rather than excess detail. The silhouette is clean and direct, sitting close through the body with a balanced, structured shape that holds itself naturally.

The leather is horsehide, dense and tightly grained with a smooth, even surface that reflects very light use. It carries a reassuring weight in the hand, with firmness through the body and sleeves, yet remains supple where it needs to be. The surface is clean and consistent, without developed patina, giving the jacket a sharper and more refined appearance than typically seen in pieces of this type.

This example was produced by Al’s Attire, based in the North Beach district of San Francisco, USA. Operating from Grant Avenue since the mid-1980s, the workshop is known for producing bespoke, hand-tailored leather garments using traditional construction methods, high-quality hides, and period-correct hardware. Pieces were made to order rather than in volume, resulting in individual jackets shaped by both maker and wearer.

The construction reflects that approach. As a bespoke piece, the proportions differ slightly from standard production jackets, with an extended sleeve length that suggests it was tailored for a taller wearer. This gives the jacket a distinctive line through the arm while maintaining a clean, balanced silhouette overall.

Hardware is consistent with the build. A Talon front zipper is fitted, in keeping with the workshop’s use of quality hardware, sitting naturally within the jacket.

Condition and Preservation

The jacket has been professionally cleaned and leather-dressed to restore balance and flexibility to the horsehide following a period of storage. This has been carried out with restraint, preserving the original surface, tone, and natural finish without artificial enhancement.

Condition is excellent overall. The horsehide remains supple, structurally sound, and evenly balanced throughout, with no signs of wear, damage, or fatigue. The surface is clean and consistent, reflecting very limited use, with only the faintest signs of handling visible on close inspection.

All seams remain strong, the lining is clean and stable, and all closures function as they should.

The overall impression is of a lightly worn, well-preserved bespoke jacket that retains its original character, structure, and material quality, presenting clean, sharp, and ready for continued wear.
