Cut in the early 1980s, this piece draws clear influence from mid century European aviation jackets, particularly the restrained and functional silhouettes associated with Scandinavian flight-wear of the 1940s. The design is purposeful and understated, with a strong, square profile and a clean double breasted front that gives it presence without excess.
The cowhide is soft, heavy, and naturally grained, with a deep, developed patina that reflects years of wear. Tonal variation across the panels gives the surface depth, shifting subtly in light while retaining a grounded, uniform character. It has weight in the hand and hangs with intent, reinforcing the jacket’s structured silhouette.
The wool collar and full wool lining add both warmth and texture, complementing the leather with a softer contrast while remaining true to its aviation-inspired roots. The overall feel is substantial, both physically and visually, with a balance between durability and wearability.
Condition and Preservation
The jacket has been professionally cleaned and conditioned to restore balance and flexibility to the leather following a period of dryness. This work has been carried out with restraint, preserving the original surface, tone, and patina without artificial enhancement.
Condition is very good for the period. The cowhide remains soft, supple, and structurally sound throughout, with no signs of weakness. The grain has developed naturally, contributing to the depth and character of the surface. There is minor surface marking to the upper front along the lapel fold, visible as light creasing and superficial scarring that has not broken through the leather.
Some of the front buttons have been replaced over time with close, period-appropriate examples that sit well within the overall look. The wool collar shows light shedding at the base in small areas, only noticeable on close inspection. The wool lining remains clean and stable, with only minor wear consistent with age.
All closures are intact and fully functional.
The overall impression is of a well-preserved jacket that retains its material integrity, weight, and character, with honest signs of use that sit naturally within the piece.
