During the early 1960s, Cooper Sportswear of New York carried forward the spirit of America’s wartime aviation heritage — producing leather jackets that combined military design with mid-century style. This example represents that period beautifully: a civilian A-2 flight jacket crafted from supple brown cowhide, lined in soft fleece, and finished with a dark shearling collar.
The leather has a naturally aged surface with a deep, even tone and subtle patina — smooth yet full of life, showing the quiet elegance of a garment that’s been cared for over decades. Its mid-weight cowhide retains a firm, structured feel typical of 1960s U.S. hides, while the surface shows gentle creasing and rich depth of colour. The craftsmanship is unmistakably Cooper: strong seam work, balanced proportions, and hardware built to last.
All the defining features of the A-2 are present — button-down flap pockets, ribbed wool cuffs and waistband, shoulder epaulettes, and a heavy-duty Talon main zipper, all original and fully functional. The dark brown shearling collar adds warmth and texture, giving the jacket both presence and comfort. Inside, the fleece lining remains clean and intact, making it an ideal three-season piece.
This jacket has been professionally leather cleaned and conditioned in-house, using our own specialist formulas developed for vintage hides. The treatment restores suppleness and depth of tone while preserving the integrity of the original finish, ensuring the leather remains strong, nourished, and full of character.
Condition is excellent vintage, showing light signs of wear consistent with age but no rips, tears, or structural issues. A beautifully preserved example of early postwar American craftsmanship — timeless, practical, and full of understated confidence.
