Purpose built and cut for the demands of highway state patrol, this late 1960s to early 1970s American police motorcycle jacket reflects the practical shift in municipal outerwear during the period. Shorter and more mobile than earlier long patrol coats, it was designed to sit cleanly over uniform while allowing ease of movement in the riding position.
The jacket follows the standard American police motorcycle configuration of the era. The exterior is heavyweight chrome tanned cowhide with a tight, compact grain typical of uniform contract production. The hide carries natural creasing through the sleeves and torso from years of use, while the main body panels retain strong structure and integrity. Surface tonal variation and light abrasion at high contact areas reflect honest service wear without structural compromise.
The front is secured by a double zip end, period Talon metal zipper which runs smoothly and remains original to the garment. Dual chest flap pockets, vertical hand warmer zip pockets, and shoulder epaulettes complete the patrol specification. The shirt collar maintains a clean and functional profile consistent with municipal issue motorcycle jackets of the time.
The Quincy, Massachusetts Police Department shoulder patch remains in place, grounding the jacket firmly in its working history. The vertical stitched quilted lining is characteristic of late 1960s production and remains intact and serviceable, providing insulation without excess bulk.
Condition and Preservation
This jacket presents in very good overall condition for its age.
The leather retains excellent strength and resilience, with natural creasing and surface wear consistent with active service. These signs of use add depth and authenticity without affecting performance. All hardware remains original and operational. The Talon main zip and pocket zips have been carefully serviced and lubricated to ensure smooth movement. Snaps fasten securely and seam construction remains dependable throughout.
The vertical quilted lining is intact and fully wearable, showing only age appropriate wear. The jacket has been professionally cleaned and conditioned in our workshop to support flexibility and long term preservation. No structural leather repairs were necessary.
A well preserved late 1960s to early 1970s American police motorcycle jacket with genuine municipal provenance. Examples from this period in comparable wearable condition are becoming increasingly scarce.
