There is a depth to this jacket that only time and material can produce. Cut from dense vegetable tanned leather and worn consistently over decades, it has developed a surface that shifts between near black and warm tobacco, the outer finish gradually breaking back through use to reveal the core beneath. This is natural teacore, formed slowly through wear, not artificially created or forced. It gives the jacket a movement and variation that cannot be replicated.
Made in France during the 1950s, the cut follows the blouson aviateur line that moved out of military use and into civilian life after the war. Originally developed for aircrew in the late 1930s, this style was adopted by motorcyclists and workers who needed protection and warmth without compromise. By the early post-war period, the better civilian examples were built to the same standard as their military counterparts. This is one of those jackets.
The construction is direct and purposeful. The front closes with its original Éclair zip, running clean and correct to the period. Éclair first patented their fastener design in 1924, and by the 1950s their hardware had become the standard across high-quality French manufacture. Matching zips are fitted to the angled chest pocket and the twin lower handwarmer pockets, now aged into a deep, even tone. The seams are piped throughout, with the underlying tan now visible at the edges where the outer layer has worn back. Cuff adjusters close with simple metal studs, keeping the line of the sleeve clean while remaining fully functional.
Inside, the jacket is fully lined in sheepskin. The body carries a deep burnt terracotta tone, dense and insulating, while the collar is finished in a darker chocolate shearling with a heavier pile. Both remain original, creating a strong contrast against the darker exterior. It is a jacket built first for warmth, then for durability, and that intention still defines it.
The leather remains structurally sound throughout, with no cracking, thinning, or weakness. Wear is consistent with long-term use, concentrated at natural movement points, and reads as character rather than damage. All seams remain secure, every zip functions as it should, and the lining is intact and fully wearable. The jacket has been professionally cleaned and lightly conditioned in the workshop to support the leather while preserving its original tone and surface.
Original Éclair hardware with its roots in early 20th century French manufacture, a fully intact sheepskin lining, and a naturally developed teacore surface across a dense vegetable tanned hide. Pieces in this condition, with this level of completeness, are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
