Boris Kidrič Export production places this heavy leather trench coat within the industrial landscape of 1950s Yugoslavia, at the height of the early Cold War. It reflects a state manufacturing ethos that prioritised durability, climate protection and export quality above decoration, produced within a centrally directed framework focused on resilience and international trade.

The coat itself reflects that intent. Cut from dense full grain bovine hide, it carries exceptional weight while remaining remarkably supple. Decades of wear have brought the leather into a rich, natural patina, with tonal depth and surface polish that only time can produce. It hangs with authority and feels engineered rather than styled.

Function defines every detail. A full waist belt with solid metal buckle shapes the silhouette. Adjustable cuff straps and storm lined cuffs seal out wind. The collar fastens high at the throat via its original latch, transforming it into a protective winter overcoat. Inside sits a fully removable sheepskin lining, thick and insulating, allowing the coat to serve through deep winter or milder transitional months. At the rear, a press stud skirt split provides movement while maintaining protection, a detail more commonly associated with military or state service garments than civilian fashion.

Coats of this type were typically worn by officials, transport authorities, industrial supervisors and those working within state structures where presentation and resilience both mattered. It is not speculative to place this within that sphere. The weight, construction and removable shearling system point toward genuine cold climate use rather than fashion retail.

The leather shows honest age and character throughout. Creasing, grain variation and areas of burnished wear are consistent with long term use. There are no structural issues. Stitching remains strong, hardware functions correctly, and the belt and buckles retain integrity. The coat presents as heavy, sound and entirely wearable.

This is a serious mid century Eastern European leather overcoat with presence, history and unmistakable Cold War character.

Condition and Preservation

The coat presents in excellent overall condition for its age.

The full grain leather remains supple, weighty and structurally secure throughout. Surface creasing, tonal shifts and areas of polished wear are consistent with long term use and contribute to the depth of patina. There are no signs of cracking, panel weakness or instability. Stitching remains firm across stress points including shoulders, belt anchors and hem.

All exterior hardware remains intact and functional. Buckles retain their integrity and the throat latch fastening operates correctly. The press stud rear skirt split secures cleanly. The removable sheepskin lining remains complete and substantial, with no structural issues to the hide or fleece.

The garment has been professionally cleaned and carefully conditioned in our workshop to maintain suppleness and protect the leather. No structural reconstruction was required. The focus has been on preservation rather than alteration.
