This leather jacket represents a well-preserved example of German motorcycle outerwear from the wartime period, associated with dispatch rider use across both civilian and military contexts during the early 1940s. Garments of this type were produced with a clear emphasis on durability and function, intended to withstand sustained wear in exposed conditions rather than serve as formal uniform pieces.

The design is direct and purposeful. Cut short through the body with a diagonal front closure and belted waist, the silhouette is compact, secure, and engineered for use on the motorcycle. The asymmetrical front provides added protection across the chest, while the belt allows the jacket to be drawn in and stabilised when riding. Proportions remain balanced, with a structure that continues to hold its form despite age.

The leather displays a broad, open grain consistent with period cowhide. Unlike the tighter structure of horsehide, this example shows a more natural break across the surface, with visible grain movement throughout the sleeves and body. The hide remains structurally sound, retaining both strength and flexibility, with a responsive hand that reflects careful preservation rather than decline. A well-developed patina is present across all panels, with tonal variation ranging from deeper base tones to warmer highlights at areas of movement, built gradually through use rather than artificial treatment.

Internally, the jacket is lined in brown moleskin typical of the period, providing a practical and durable interior. The lining remains in very good condition, with only light, age-appropriate wear visible at stress points. The overall structure is intact and fully functional.

The hardware is consistent with period construction. The main front closure and chest pocket operate smoothly, with zip pulls replaced during the jacket’s working life using period-correct examples. This reflects continued use and maintenance rather than later restoration. All components function as intended.

Condition and Preservation

The jacket has been professionally cleaned and conditioned to restore balance and flexibility to the leather following a period of dryness. This work has been carried out with restraint, preserving the original surface, tone, and patina without artificial enhancement.

Condition is very good for the period. The leather remains structurally sound throughout, with no evidence of weakness or failure. The grain has opened naturally, contributing to the depth and character of the surface without compromising integrity. The lining is well preserved, showing only minor wear consistent with age, and remains clean and stable.

All hardware is intact and fully operational.

The overall impression is of a jacket that has been used, maintained, and preserved with care, retaining both its functional integrity and material character.

A strong and authentic example of a WWII-era German dispatch rider leather jacket, defined by its construction, material quality, and the natural patina developed through time and use.
