This Swedish officers’ trench coat, crafted in the 1940s by Joel Jonsson of Malungsfors, is an exceptional example of Scandinavian military design and craftsmanship. Produced for Swedish Armed Forces officers during the Second World War, this pattern is known to have been worn by both Army and Air Force personnel. Built to endure harsh northern climates, it combines technical resilience with the dignified silhouette expected of officer-issue garments.
Cut from heavyweight full-grain goatskin, the coat exhibits the fine, pebbled grain and rich natural sheen characteristic of the Malung tanning tradition — a hallmark of Sweden’s leather industry during the wartime period. The hide is strong yet supple, carrying substantial weight while maintaining an elegant drape. A full sheepskin collar crowns the design, providing warmth, contrast, and unmistakable period authenticity. The long double-breasted cut, reinforced seams, and structured shoulders embody the functional elegance of 1940s officer tailoring.
Condition is excellent throughout. The leather remains strong, supple, and beautifully preserved with no rips, tears, or structural flaws. The interior lining is clean and intact, while the sheepskin collar retains its depth, softness, and original tone. Professionally cleaned and conditioned in-house using specialist formulations, the coat has been restored to ensure the hide retains its strength, flexibility, and natural oils while preserving its aged character.
Bearing the Joel Jonsson, Malungsfors maker’s label and the faint Three Crowns (Tre Kronor) military stamp, this coat represents an important piece of Swedish wartime heritage — a garment of authority, craftsmanship, and quiet distinction.
Professional Restoration Process
This coat has undergone a careful, multi-stage restoration process carried out entirely in-house. It was professionally leather-cleaned using specialist equipment to ensure the hide was deeply treated and cleansed while preserving its natural texture and patina. Our own hand-formulated conditioning products were applied to restore suppleness and depth, and all seams, buttons, and interior components were inspected for durability. The result is a beautifully preserved WWII-era garment, revitalised for continued wear or collection.
