Built in Germany during the late 1940s to early 1950s, this motorcycle jacket reflects the continuation of wartime and pre war protective clothing into the post war civilian period. Jackets of this type were worn by motorcyclists, dispatch riders, and pilots who required durable, close fitting outerwear capable of withstanding wind, road exposure, and prolonged use. The design language is purposeful and confident, shaped by function rather than fashion.
The jacket is cut from mid weight, tight grained horsehide, a material favoured for its strength, abrasion resistance, and ability to hold structure over time. The leather remains firm yet flexible throughout, with no areas of collapse or weakness. Surface wear has developed evenly, resulting in a settled patina with natural creasing and tonal depth. The deep green finish is distinctive and period correct, setting the jacket apart from more common black or brown examples while remaining understated and functional.
The cut is compact and well balanced, designed to sit close to the body for protection while riding. An asymmetrical zip front provides wind resistance, while the adjustable belt with its leather covered buckle allows the waist to be drawn in securely. Buttoned leather cuff straps offer further adjustment and protection. Across the back, a pronounced yoke adds both structure and visual definition, reinforcing the shoulders and contributing to the jacket’s strong silhouette.
Inside, the jacket retains its original moleskin lining, a durable and comfortable fabric commonly used in German utilitarian garments of the period. The lining shows light, even wear consistent with age and remains fully intact and serviceable. The original Haelson label is present, confirming maker and origin.
In terms of condition, the jacket shows honest age related wear consistent with long term use. The main front zip was replaced decades ago with a period correct example and functions smoothly. The original pocket zips remain intact and operational. Stitching and seams remain strong throughout, and the jacket retains its original shape and protective character.
The jacket has been professionally cleaned and conditioned in house using specialist workshop processes suitable for heritage horsehide. This has restored flexibility and comfort while preserving the leather’s natural surface character and patina. No attempt has been made to over restore or remove signs of age.
Overall, this is a well preserved and authentic example of post war German motorcycle clothing, combining disciplined design, high quality materials, and practical longevity. It remains a wearable garment with presence and integrity, equally suited to careful use or inclusion in a serious collection.
