Designed for the practical demands of post war motorcycling, this late 1940s German riding jacket reflects the functional engineering of early European motorcycle clothing. Jackets of this type formed part of the emerging civilian riding gear produced in Germany during the immediate post war years, when motorcycles became essential everyday transport across the country.
The jacket follows the classic asymmetrical motorcycle pattern, allowing the front to sit naturally when worn in the riding position. Broad lapels frame the angled closure, while the waist belt allows the fit to be drawn in and secured against wind. The cut is compact and purposeful, typical of motorcycle garments produced during the late 1940s rebuilding period. Four zip pockets provide practical storage, positioned across the chest and waist for easy access, while zip cuffs allow the sleeves to be tightened around gloves. Quilted diamond panels across the shoulders reinforce the upper section of the jacket and add further character to the design.
The leather carries the natural character expected from a garment that has seen decades of use. Areas of tonal variation and patina are visible across the surface, particularly along the belt, pocket openings and lower edges where the original finish has gradually worn back to reveal lighter tones beneath. These marks reflect the jacket’s long working life and give the leather a depth and authenticity that collectors often look for in early European motorcycle jackets.
Period hardware remains present throughout. The jacket retains early Ruhr and Opti zippers, both associated with German manufacturing during the immediate post war years. These substantial metal zips were widely used on motorcycle and workwear garments produced during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The waist belt retains its original Gutos buckle, a German maker known for producing durable metal garment hardware during the same period.
Inside, the jacket is lined with durable moleskin, a dense cotton fabric valued for its strength and warmth. Linings of this type are frequently seen in German and Austrian motorcycle jackets of the era and were chosen for their ability to withstand regular use while remaining comfortable against the body.
The jacket carries honest signs of its working life, with visible patina and wear consistent with age. The leather remains structurally sound and retains the substance expected from motorcycle garments of this period. It has been specialist leather cleaned and carefully conditioned so it presents well while remaining true to its original character.
It stands today as a well preserved example of late 1940s German motorcycle clothing, retaining the materials, hardware and character that define the period.
