There’s a lived-in depth to this jacket that comes through immediately, not just in the way it looks, but in how the leather responds in the hand. The surface carries a well-developed patina, built gradually over decades, sitting within the grain rather than on top of it. Tonal shifts move across the panels, with creasing and marking that feel settled and natural, giving the jacket a quiet sense of history without affecting its strength.

Produced in Germany during the late 1930s to 1940s, this is a piece that sits between civilian motorcycle wear and the kind of garments used for dispatch riding. The construction reflects that purpose. Nothing excessive, nothing decorative, just what was needed for consistent use in varying conditions.

The cowhide remains soft and supple, with a balanced feel throughout. Some areas retain a touch more structure, while others have broken in over time, creating contrast across the jacket without any loss of integrity. It’s the kind of wear that adds movement and character, while the hide itself remains stable and fully wearable.

The cut follows early European motorcycle proportions, carrying length through the body with a defined waist. The integrated belt allows the shape to be drawn in cleanly, holding the line of the jacket while working naturally with the body.

Construction is direct and considered. Horizontal chest zip pockets sit high across the front, with lower pockets angled into the waist for practical use. A shaped yoke provides structure through the shoulders, while the collar remains simple and functional in keeping with the rest of the piece.

The hardware is consistent with the period. Original OPTI zips remain in place, carrying early markings associated with German production, all functioning as intended. The waist is secured with a GUTOS buckle, a detail seen across German garments of the time and one that sits naturally within the build of the jacket.

Inside, the original lining remains in place, showing age that matches the exterior. The Waldo label is still present at the neck, pointing to smaller workshop manufacture rather than large-scale production, and reinforcing its origin.

Condition and Preservation

The jacket presents in very good vintage condition. The cowhide remains soft, structurally sound, and consistent throughout, with a well-established patina, natural creasing, and areas of marking formed through long-term use. These sit within the surface of the leather and do not indicate weakness.

The lining shows age-related wear and is in fair condition, remaining intact and serviceable, with historic repairs under the arms that hold well. All hardware is original and fully functional, including the OPTI zips and GUTOS buckle.

The jacket has been professionally cleaned and conditioned in the workshop to restore balance to the leather while preserving its original tone, patina, and character. Stitching, seams, and overall construction remain strong.

A well-preserved wartime example, defined as much by its patina and use as its construction.
