Substantial, purposeful and full of character, this French leather jacket dates to the late 1940s or early 1950s, produced during the immediate post war years as France rebuilt its industries and manufacturing capacity. During this period leather garments were still designed first and foremost for durability and protection, worn by mechanics, motorists and skilled tradesmen who required outerwear capable of enduring demanding daily use.

The jacket is constructed from dense heavy leather finished in a deep dark brown that borders on black, now displaying pronounced tea core character throughout. Over decades of wear the darker surface finish has gradually revealed the rich brown base tone beneath, creating the warm natural patina visible across the sleeves, shoulders and body. This type of ageing is highly prized among collectors and gives the jacket the depth and authenticity only genuine vintage leather develops.

The cut follows a classic French workwear and motoring silhouette, slightly longer through the body with a strong practical structure designed to provide warmth while allowing freedom of movement. The front is secured by a full length Éclair zipper, one of France’s most respected mid century zipper manufacturers. Two angled chest pockets also feature original Éclair zips, positioned for easy access when seated or working, while two lower flap pockets provide additional storage.

A particularly notable feature is the removable shearling liner which zips cleanly into the jacket, offering substantial insulation for colder conditions. When removed, the interior reveals a handsome wool plaid lining beneath, allowing the jacket to be worn comfortably across different seasons. The collar is trimmed with thick dark mouton fur which adds both warmth and a striking visual contrast against the dark leather.

The leather remains strong and supple following professional cleaning and careful conditioning. The tea core patina seen throughout is entirely natural and reflects decades of honest use. Areas of surface wear and colour variation appear across the sleeves, shoulders and body, adding character while remaining structurally sound. All original Éclair zippers are present and have been carefully refurbished and waxed to ensure smooth operation, while the removable liner remains complete. It remains a superb surviving example of post war French leather craftsmanship and is perfectly suited for collection, display and occasional wear.

Jackets of this type were produced in relatively small numbers and rarely survive in such complete form with their original liner and hardware intact. Today it stands as a rare and compelling example of post war French leather craftsmanship, combining the rugged practicality of European workwear with the unmistakable character of a beautifully aged tea core hide.
