On a winter beat in New York, a patrolman needed a jacket that could stand in the cold for hours, take a knock and still look sharp at the end of the shift. Schott, a maker that has also dressed American law enforcement, knew exactly what that meant. This jacket is cut in the same mould: black, heavy and businesslike.

It’s made from thick, dense cowhide, the hide a duty jacket calls for. It has settled into a deep, even black with a soft sheen across the chest and shoulders. The grain is still clear on the yoke and sleeves, and natural creasing at the elbows and pockets shows it has been worn without being worn down. It’s substantial in the hand and moves easily once it’s on.

The details follow the patrol pattern. Two chest pockets close under pointed flaps, with a zip pocket above each one for anything that mustn’t fall out. Slanted zip pockets sit low for the hands. Snap tabs at the cuffs and waist close it against the wind. The main zip is a heavy SCHOTT USA zip with a leather pull that’s easy to grip in gloves, and every snap carries the Schott name.

For the worst of the weather, a black fleece windbreaker with an attached hood zips in behind the front, sealing the chest and covering the head. It zips out when it’s not needed. Inside, the upper back is lined in fleece embroidered “Schott N.Y.C.”, above a diamond-quilted lining edged in Schott-branded tape.

The jacket was developed for Schott’s European house in Paris and made in a limited seasonal run, with care labels in English and French. It has long since left production and seldom comes up for sale. Fewer still turn up in heavy cowhide this well kept, with the hooded windbreaker complete.

It’s a duty jacket in the Schott tradition, built for the cold and ready for a long winter.

Condition & Restoration

Excellent condition throughout.

The heavy black cowhide is strong and supple, with a deep, even colour and a soft sheen across the chest and shoulders. 

All the hardware is sound. The SCHOTT USA main zip and pocket zips run smoothly from end to end, and every Schott snap on the cuffs, waist tabs and pocket flaps closes firmly. The removable hooded fleece windbreaker is complete, and its zip works perfectly. The embroidered fleece back and the diamond-quilted lining are clean and intact.

The jacket has been specialist cleaned and conditioned in-house, and its character has been carefully preserved.

Fit: Cut along the lines of a classic patrol jacket, long enough to reach the hip for extra cover in the cold, with snap tabs at the waist to draw it in. Schott’s European sizing runs small, so although the label reads XXXL, it fits as an XL. Please go by the measurements above.
