This Aero Montgomery is a substantial example of late twentieth century British leatherwork, dating from the late 1980s and cut from open grain front quarter horsehide. It reflects a period when Aero were producing jackets with minimal surface finishing, allowing the hide to age naturally through wear rather than relying on heavy factory coatings. The result is leather with depth, variation, and a surface character that can only be earned over time.
When acquired, the jacket had been heavily over conditioned with oil and wax based products, leaving a dense surface residue that masked the natural grain and restricted the leather’s movement. A full specialist cleaning process was carried out to remove this buildup and return the hide to its intended state. Once clean, the jacket was reconditioned using our Neutral Workshop Blend, applied sparingly to rebalance the leather without altering its finish. The horsehide now presents with clarity and openness, retaining its original character alongside a rich patina and burnished surface formed through decades of genuine wear.
The Montgomery design combines practical construction with a relaxed, wearable silhouette. This example features a full zip front, cotton lined hand warmer pockets, and a zip chest pocket with a leather faced opening. The back is finished with a shallow, curved yoke across the shoulders, providing structure and ease of movement without becoming a dominant visual feature. Inside, the tweed lining reinforces the jacket’s British heritage and adds warmth and texture.
As part of the restoration, the storm cuffs were replaced due to damage, restoring full function while remaining sympathetic to the original construction. The main zip has been professionally refurbished and now operates smoothly throughout. The restoration process took approximately five days to complete, with a clear focus on correction and preservation rather than alteration.
The jacket is now in excellent condition. The leather is clean, supple, and structurally sound, with an open grain surface that responds naturally to handling. Patina remains present and authentic, with tonal variation and burnishing consistent with long term use. All components are fully functional, and the jacket presents exactly as shown in the images.
This is a resolved and honest example of a late 1980s Aero Montgomery. Heavy in the hand, balanced in wear, and restored with restraint, it offers longevity, character, and material integrity for continued ownership.
