Cut from heavy leather and built for long-term service, this German officer’s trench coat reflects the authority and practicality of wartime private-purchase tailoring. Commissioned for a senior officer rather than issued as standard kit, garments of this type were made to a noticeably higher specification, with emphasis placed on material quality, durability, and presence rather than uniformity.
Senior officers were required to source their own outerwear through approved military outfitters, often commissioning bespoke or semi-bespoke pieces. As a result, examples such as this were produced in far smaller numbers than issued clothing and display a level of restraint and construction that clearly separates them from civilian or post-war manufacture.
The cut is long through the body with a strong, structured shoulder line and a clean, authoritative drape. A double-breasted front is balanced by a belted waist, allowing the silhouette to be shaped without restricting movement. Adjustable cuff straps and a neatly proportioned collar complete the design, which is functional, disciplined, and purposeful, with no excess detailing.
The leather shows even, honest surface wear throughout, with natural grain and period patina developed consistently over time. It remains supple and responsive, retaining strength and structure without stiffness or fatigue. A removable liner is present and fits correctly, allowing wear across seasons while remaining true to its original use.
Original military-grade hardware is retained throughout. This includes SHB press studs manufactured by Schaeffer-Homberg, a known supplier of snap fasteners and metal fittings for German military use during the period. The belt and cuff straps are finished with original Gutos buckles, another respected German maker associated with wartime military hardware. Together, these fittings support the intended military context and senior officer specification, rather than later civilian production.
Dating to the 1940s is supported by a combination of construction details, materials, and hardware. The weight and finish of the leather, the tailoring style, the removable liner system, and the presence of period-correct SHB press studs and Gutos buckles all align with known Second World War production rather than post-war manufacture.
Following professional leather cleaning, the piece was treated in-house using our neutral conditioner, then finished with our maintenance conditioner to restore flexibility and depth without altering surface character. This work was carried out with restraint, intended to revive the leather while preserving original texture, tone, and age.
Condition is very good throughout. Structure remains strong, stitching is secure across all panels and stress points, and the garment holds its shape exceptionally well. There are no structural concerns, and it presents as clean, stable, and fully wearable, with character that reflects age rather than deterioration.
Private-purchase German officer trenches of this quality, retaining correct military hardware and sound construction, are increasingly difficult to find. This is a strong, well-preserved example that balances historical significance, material quality, and long-term wearability.
