Few jackets carry as much history as the G-1, and few makers know it better than Cockpit. This one, made in the USA, has the deep patina and easy feel of a jacket that has already done its time.
Inside, the label is laid out like a wartime issue tag: “G-1 Flight Jacket, BuAer – U.S. Navy, Specification M-422A”. BuAer was the Navy’s Bureau of Aeronautics, which decided what every naval aviator wore. M-422A, dated October 1940, gave the G-1 the shape it has kept ever since, and Cockpit follows it faithfully. There’s pebble-grained goatskin for strength without weight, a mouton collar that turns up against the wind, a bi-swing back that opens as you reach for the controls, and knitted cuffs and waistband to keep the cold out at altitude.
The name behind it explains the detail. Jeff Clyman was a warbird pilot, flying Second World War aircraft at airshows, when crowds began asking where they could buy a jacket like his. In 1975 he founded Avirex in New York to reproduce original A-2s and G-1s to the old military patterns. Avirex grew into one of the most famous flight jacket names in the world, supplying the US Air Force and promoting Top Gun alongside Paramount in 1986. When he sold the Avirex name in 2006, Clyman kept the military side and carried it on as Cockpit, still made in the USA to the original specifications.
The goatskin has settled into a deep seal brown, with mahogany and russet tones coming through on the shoulders, pocket flaps, seams and back yoke, and soft creasing through the sleeves and body. It wears comfortably from the first day, with no breaking in. The mouton collar is full and soft in warm ginger tan, and the dark brown knit at the cuffs and waist still holds its shape.
A Navy pattern, an American maker, and the character only time and wear can give.
Condition & Restoration
Very good condition.
The goatskin is strong and supple, with natural creasing and a deep, even patina across the body, sleeves and back. The mouton collar is full and well preserved. The pocket buttons are complete, and the lining is clean and intact.
The jacket has been specialist leather cleaned and dressed in-house. The zips have been refurbished, polished and waxed, and all the knitted ribbing at the cuffs and waistband has been refurbished. Its natural wear and character have been carefully preserved.
