A museum-quality example of WWII German military craftsmanship, this authentic Wehrmacht officer's leather trench coat exemplifies the superior materials and construction reserved for German military leadership during the 1940s. Fashioned from premium horsehide leather—prized for its exceptional durability and distinctive aging characteristics—this coat has developed a rich patina that only genuine historical pieces acquire over decades.
This garment is specifically what German military historians identify as a "Ledermantel" or "Offizier-Ledermantel," a distinctive pattern issued to Wehrmacht officers throughout the war years. These leather trench coats were primarily worn by Wehrmacht officers, particularly those in the armoured divisions (Panzer units) and motorised infantry. They were prized for their durability, weather resistance, and warmth, making them practical for officers who spent time in vehicles and exposed positions in harsh weather conditions.
The substantial weight of the garment immediately conveys its military-grade construction, designed to withstand the harshest field conditions while maintaining an authoritative appearance. Its double-breasted design features six distinctive leather-covered buttons arranged in the classic military configuration, with reinforced buttonholes that have maintained their structural integrity despite eight decades of existence.
A notable feature is the removable plaid wool inner lining—a practical element that allowed for temperature regulation across varying combat environments while providing superior insulation during harsh European winters. The belt, complete with its leather-covered buckle, shows the only significant wear on this otherwise remarkably preserved specimen, with the leather covering partially worn away from the buckle—a battle scar that authenticates its service history rather than diminishing its value.
The wide lapels, precision-stitched seams, and button-adjustable cuffs with decorative straps all demonstrate the exacting standards of German military tailoring. The full-length design provided comprehensive protection from the elements, extending below the knee for maximum coverage during harsh winter deployments and inclement weather conditions.
