It carries the original black woven Jofa label in gold and red script, a label that was only used on leather clothing until 1973.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eMalung has long been called the leather capital of Sweden. For generations its men worked as \u003cem\u003eskinnare\u003c\/em\u003e: tanners, furriers and leather tailors who travelled the country buying hides and selling what they made from them. Niss Oskar Jonsson grew up in that tradition. He founded Jofa in 1926, when he was around seventeen, and his first products were made from offcuts left over by the local hide trade. His first workshop was an old tannery. During the Second World War the company grew through Swedish military orders for tents and uniforms, and it made leather clothing alongside skates, tents and other sporting goods. From 1963 it also made ice hockey helmets. In 1973 Volvo bought the sports side and the Jofa name, and Jonsson kept the leather clothing, renaming that business Jofama, short for Jonssons Fabriker Malung. Most Malung leather that turns up today carries the later Jofama label. This jacket comes from before the split, when leather clothing and sporting goods still came out of the same company.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe leather is goatskin with a tight, pebbled grain, and the patina is the heart of this jacket. Decades of wear have worked the brown into lighter tan across the shoulders, the pocket flaps, the edges of the fronts and the cuffs, and the colour changes shade by shade from one panel to the next. Every crease and every lighter patch comes from years of being worn. It's the kind of surface you can look at for a long time and keep finding something new, and no new leather can have it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eIt is cut double-breasted, with a stand collar that closes with a buttoned throat tab or can be folded open into small lapels. There is a flapped chest pocket on the left, two flapped lower pockets, a centre back seam and a half belt across the back with a small metal buckle. The cuffs close with a button. Everything about the cut, from the overlapping front to the closed collar and the belted back, is built to keep out the cold, the way Scandinavian leather jackets of this period were made for driving and working outdoors.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eInside, the body is lined in a red, green, black and cream check wool, bordered with black wool at the collar and hem, and the sleeves are lined in grey satin so the jacket slides on easily. There is an inside chest pocket trimmed in leather and a leather hanging loop at the neck. The buttons are a mix of brown, reddish and grey, gathered over the jacket's working life as they were lost and replaced.
