original-1950s-french-vachette-leather-motorcycle-jacket
Original 1950s French Vachette Leather Motorcycle Jacket

In 1950s France, the motorcycle represented something more immediate than leisure. For many riders it was everyday transport, a way through towns, across country roads and between cities in an era when the person in the saddle remained completely exposed to the elements. Good riding clothing therefore had a simple job: keep out the wind, withstand hard use and allow the rider to move.

This original French motorcycle jacket was built for that world.

Cut from substantial chrome-tanned vachette, it has the compact, purposeful shape of post-war European riding clothing, but without the bulk or overt military character found in many jackets of the period. There is an elegance to it too. Worn open, the broad pointed collar and clean four-pocket front give it the appearance of a particularly handsome civilian leather jacket. Fasten it properly and its original purpose becomes much clearer.

The main zipper runs high into the collar, closing the leather closely around the neck against wind and weather. At the opposite end, a substantial press-stud leather tab crosses the base of the zipper and secures the jacket at the waist. Long leather straps buckle around the cuffs. Together these details effectively close the jacket at the neck, waist and wrists, precisely where a rider would otherwise feel the wind working its way inside.

Even the pockets have character. Two shaped breast pockets are secured by unusual brass-tone turn-latch fastenings, with two further welt pockets positioned below. They are small pieces of period engineering, practical rather than decorative, and among the details that make this jacket so distinctive.

Then there is the vachette.

More than seventy years have changed it completely. Deep brown survives in the protected areas, while the shoulders and sleeves have gradually opened into chestnut, warm cognac and golden amber-brown. Creases follow the movement of the arms, edges have softened through handling and fine scratches and rubbing remain scattered across the surface. None of it follows the predictable pattern of a manufactured distressed finish. The colour has developed according to where the jacket was touched, flexed, exposed and worn.

Inside, the contrast is remarkable. The brown diamond-quilted body lining remains exceptionally well preserved, accompanied by red and cream striped cotton sleeve linings. It gives us a glimpse of how complete and substantial the jacket would have felt when first worn, even as the exterior now carries the evidence of the decades that followed.

Its working life can also be read in the main fastening. The original zipper was replaced long before the jacket came to our workshop, and a vintage metal YKK zipper is now fitted. Earlier stitch tracks remain visible behind the current zipper tape. Rather than disguise them, they remain part of the jacket's history, evidence that someone considered it worth keeping in service.

There is no surviving maker's label and no name connecting it to the person who wore it. We will not invent that history. What the jacket itself tells us is enough: the protective collar, secured cuffs and waist, unusual hardware, substantial French vachette and the extraordinary wear left by more than seventy years of use.

It survives not as a reproduction of 1950s motorcycle culture, but as a piece of it.

Built for the road in post-war France, and carrying every decade since.

Condition & Restoration

Excellent vintage condition for an original 1950s leather motorcycle jacket.

The chrome-tanned vachette remains strong, supple and structurally sound. Decades of wear have produced extensive natural colour variation, from deeper brown and chestnut through warm cognac to golden amber-brown across the most exposed areas. Fine scratches, rubbing, creasing, softened edges and areas of finish wear remain visible and form part of the jacket's established character.

The brown diamond-quilted body lining is remarkably well preserved. There is some minor localised loose stitching internally, but this is limited and does not materially affect its use. The contrasting red and cream striped cotton sleeve linings also survive particularly well.

The original main zipper is no longer present. A vintage metal YKK zipper was fitted earlier in the jacket's life, before it came to us. Earlier stitch tracks remain visible behind the current zipper tape, documenting this historic replacement. The YKK zipper operates correctly.

The jacket has been specialist leather cleaned and conditioned in-house. As part of the restoration, the leather has also been carefully reshaped to reduce undesirable set-in creasing caused by prolonged wear and storage, restoring a more natural structure and drape without altering the jacket's original construction or removing the character of the hide.

The vintage YKK zipper has been cleaned and serviced, while the breast-pocket fastenings, cuff buckles, waist fastening and remaining hardware have also been carefully cleaned.

Key Features

Original 1950s French motorcycle jacket

Made in France

Chrome-tanned vachette cowhide

Substantial, supple and naturally broken-in leather

Compact post-war European riding cut

Deep brown, chestnut, cognac and golden amber natural colour variation

Broad pointed leather collar

High-closing zip-through neck for weather protection

Two shaped breast pockets

Brass-tone turn-latch breast-pocket fastenings

Two lower welt hand pockets

Vintage YKK metal replacement main zipper

Press-stud leather tab securing the zipper at the waist

Leather cuff straps with metal buckles

Brown diamond-quilted body lining

Red and cream striped cotton sleeve linings

Excellent vintage condition

Specialist restored in-house

Garment Measurements, Laid Flat

Chest, armpit to armpit: 23.5"

Shoulders, seam to seam: 19.5"

Shoulder seam to cuff: 24"

Underarm seam to cuff: 17"

Back length, base of collar to hem: 25"

Best suited to a 42" chest, medium size.
