german-motorrad-motorcycle-jacket-1950s-oxblood-brown-braided-epaulettes
Vintage 1950s German Cowhide Leather Motorrad Motorcycle Jacket

A German grained cowhide Motorrad motorcycle jacket in deep oxblood brown, asymmetric zip-fronted and belted, dating almost certainly to the 1950s. The cut, construction, and detail place it firmly within the organised club riding culture that defined German motorcycling in the post-war decade, and it is one of the most characterful examples of that tradition we have handled.

The braided epaulettes tell the story. Running along both shoulder seams in alternating dark brown and tan leather, hand-worked into a tight flat braid and terminating at a dome stud at the shoulder, these details are strongly associated with the motorcycle club culture that emerged across Germany in the 1950s, a period when riding clubs became a central part of working life and community identity. The braid has echoes of club insignia and rank traditions. This jacket was almost certainly made for, or worn within, that world.

The construction throughout is exactly what serious German Motorrad manufacture looked like at its best. The front closes on an asymmetric off-centre zip in the classic tradition, with the original Zipp branded teeth intact and the slider replaced during our workshop preparation with a period-appropriate vintage replacement after the original was found to be broken. Twin angled chest zip pockets carry their original Zipp hardware with ball-end chain pulls, each one intact. Cuff zips run the full length of both sleeves, allowing the jacket to be sealed tight at the wrist at speed or opened for ventilation. A leather waist belt with a plain rectangular buckle cinches the body. The rear carries an elasticated waist panel that anchors the jacket independently of the belt. Quilted elbow panels are set into both sleeves, providing structured protection at the joint without adding bulk.

The leather is a grained cowhide, the surface carrying a pronounced open pebble texture that has aged with extraordinary depth. Decades of use have pulled the colour back through from deep oxblood brown to warm burgundy and tan at every point of stress, across the shoulders, along the sleeve seams, through the chest pockets and belt, producing a patina of remarkable tonal range. This is what properly grained cowhide of this quality does over time. The surface has not been restored or altered. What is visible is what the leather has become through use alone.

The interior is the original tan moleskin body lining with a separate quilted sleeve lining. Both are present throughout. The body lining carries wear consistent with the age and heavy use of the jacket, including a tear at the upper lining at the collar seam, and some general wear throughout the interior. These are all photographed clearly. The exterior structure is completely sound, every seam is tight with no weakness, and the leather remains supple and full of body.

The jacket has been cleaned in house and given a light dressing to protect the hide without altering its surface character. The front zip slider has been replaced with a period-appropriate vintage replacement and all zips have been refurbished and lubricated in the workshop and now run correctly. The history is in the leather itself.

Key Details

1950s German grained cowhide Motorrad motorcycle jacket

Asymmetric front zip, original Zipp teeth, period replacement vintage slider

Twin angled chest zip pockets with ball-end chain pulls, original Zipp hardware

Cuff zips to both sleeves, original hardware

Hand-braided two-tone leather epaulettes, dark brown and tan, dome stud termination

Quilted elbow panels to both sleeves

Leather waist belt with plain rectangular buckle

Elasticated rear waist panel, original and functional

Original tan moleskin body lining, present throughout, worn consistent with age

Tear to upper body lining at collar seam, photographed

Quilted sleeve lining, present throughout

Deep oxblood and burgundy patina, unrestored

All seams tight, structure completely solid

All zips refurbished and lubricated in house, operating correctly

Cleaned and lightly conditioned in house

Garment Measurements (Laid Flat)

Chest (armpit to armpit): 23"

Shoulders (seam to seam): 19"

Sleeve length (underarm seam to cuff): 17.5"

Sleeve length (shoulder seam to cuff): 25"

Back length (collar seam to hem): 24

Best suited to a 42" chest/ medium.
