This one clearly survived for the opposite reason. Made in France by Grillon around the 1940s to 1950s, it comes from a period when substantial leather outerwear was serious working equipment, worn across industry, transport and outdoor occupations where warmth, protection and durability mattered considerably more than appearance.

Factory and engineering work, transport, railway work and other exposed occupations created a need for leather clothing capable of resisting abrasion while providing protection from cold and difficult conditions. Neige”, translating simply as “Rain... Wind... Snow.”

More than seventy years later, the working life of the jacket is written directly into its leather. Cut from exceptionally soft brown vachette cowhide, the hide has developed a remarkably pliant, broken-in handle through decades of genuine use. Deep brown survives across quieter areas, while repeated movement and contact have revealed chestnut, tobacco and warm tan through the shoulders, sleeves, seams and pocket edges. Fine scratches, rubbing, creasing and softened edges remain throughout, creating an irregular natural patina that could never convincingly be reproduced.

Construction is direct and purposeful. Jackets like this were worn by drivers, mechanics and tradesmen through the long northern winters.

France has one of the richest workwear traditions in the world. It began in the late nineteenth century, as industry grew and factories started making clothing built specifically for work: strong, practical and cut with pockets where they were needed. For generations, blue cotton was the colour of the French worker, so much so that bleu de travail is still the name for work clothes today. Leather was the premium end of that tradition. It was more expensive and far more protective against wind and rain, and it was bought by men who needed a jacket to last, then repaired rather than replaced for years afterwards. Paris itself was one of Europe's great centres of leatherwork, and the name Cuiram echoes cuir, the French word for leather.

The design is pure working logic. The cut is straight and generous, with room across the shoulders for movement and length enough to cover the lower back. A wide placket runs down the front over a brass Éclair zip. Éclair was founded in France in 1924, when the patented modern zip was first taken up there, and its zips became a hallmark of good French clothing. The flapped chest pocket kept small things secure, the two angled hand pockets sit low where cold hands naturally fall, and pointed yokes across the chest and back add strength where the jacket takes most strain. Nothing is there for decoration.

The inside tells you how seriously it was built for the cold. The body is lined in a thick cream pile, finished at the hem with a band of quilted brown satin to stop the pile catching as the jacket is taken on and off. The sleeves are lined in brown and cream striped cotton, so the arms slide easily over a heavy jumper. A leather-framed welt pocket sits on the inside chest, with the original blue woven Cuiram label stitched beneath it. It carries the label's small figure in a striped jersey and the words marque déposée, meaning registered trademark.

After seventy years, the leather is still smooth and substantial, in a rich dark brown that has held its depth evenly across the body. It has one detail rarely seen on coats of its kind: a thick collar of hand-knitted black wool.

The best known of those services are the Carabinieri, among the oldest police forces in Europe. They were founded on 13 July 1814 by King Victor Emmanuel I of Sardinia, modelled on the French gendarmerie, and named for the carbine they carried. In 1861 they became the First Force of the newly unified Italian army. In the post-war years, as Italy rebuilt and took to the new autostrade, riders of the Carabinieri and the Polizia Stradale, the highway police, wore long leather coats like this one on motorcycle patrol and traffic duty. They were double-breasted against the wind, belted at the waist, and cut with raglan sleeves so the arms moved freely on a motorcycle or behind a wheel. Italian makers such as Confezioni CAF, whose name simply means "CAF Garments", supplied this pattern to private buyers as well as the services, and officers were often permitted to buy their own versions from specialist makers.

The goatskin is the heart of this coat. Goat was prized for outerwear because it pairs real strength with a close, supple grain that softens beautifully with age, and decades of wear have given this one an outstanding patina. The original black has worn through to rich brown across the shoulders, down the sleeves and along the hem, and every seam, edge and crease is traced in warmer tones. Across the back, the pebbled grain has taken on a deep, glassy lustre that only genuine wear can create.

The construction follows the service pattern closely. The front closes double-breasted with six original domed buttons, each scored with a woven cross. The collar can be worn open with the lapels turned back or closed high at the throat. A wide goatskin belt with raised stitched ridges runs through keepers and a rear loop to a squared buckle, and buttoned straps close the cuffs against the cold. Slanted hand pockets sit in the front panels, and piped seams run the length of the raglan sleeves.

The collar is what sets it apart. Instead of plain leather or fur, it is faced in dense black knitted wool, soft against the neck and far warmer when turned up on the road. Inside, the coat is lined throughout in tan wool, with a black cotton sleeve lining, a leather-trimmed welt pocket at the chest and a row of steel press studs along the facings. The Confezioni CAF shield label sits between the shoulders, marked size 54.

An Italian coat of real character, with a patina worth every mile of its life.

Condition & Restoration

Very good vintage condition for its age.

The goatskin is strong and supple, with natural creasing, rubbing and the extensive tonal variation described above, particularly across the shoulders, sleeves and hem. This small town in the Tarn, in the south-west of France, has worked hides since the Middle Ages, and it became famous for a tanning method using the bark of local oaks. By the seventeenth century, around a third of the town worked in tanning, glove-making, hat-making and the finer dressing of sheep and goat skins. When the railway arrived in 1895 the trade grew further still. The industry was big enough that in 1909 its workers struck for 147 days, backed by the socialist leader Jean Jaurès. Graulhet remains France's largest centre for the dressing of fine skins today.

This jacket was made there by GVF, Établissements Roger Vidal et Fils, under the Impercuir name, "le vêtement de qualité", as the green shield label inside proudly states. GVF supplied leather workwear to France's great state companies, most famously Électricité de France. This pointed double-placket pattern has become known among collectors as the "Le Corbusier jacket", after the architect who famously wore one. It dates approximately to the 1970s or early 1980s, and it was made with the care you would expect from a town that had been working leather for centuries.

The front is its most distinctive feature. A narrow placket runs down the chest, finished in a sharp point and carrying its own line of buttons, while the jacket closes with a second row beside it. The effect is part workwear, part motoring coat. A neat collar sits close at the neck. A flapped pocket rides high on the left chest, and two slanted welt pockets are set low for the hands. Buttoned tabs close the cuffs against the wind, and small metal eyelets set under the arms let the jacket breathe.

This is a jacket with real character. Years of wear have made the leather beautifully soft and supple, and they've left it covered in patina and honest distressing. The deep black has worn through to warm brown along every edge. It is the kind of surface that only a working life can create.

Inside, the colour arrives. In November 1811, at Fort St. Joseph, Captain Charles Roberts of the British Army found he couldn't get winter greatcoats for his men, so he had forty coats sewn from Hudson's Bay point blankets instead. The mackinaw, as it became known, turned into the winter coat of trappers, lumbermen and farmers across North America, and in France its descendants took the name canadienne. By the 1950s the French canadienne was a long, weatherproof coat in canvas or leather, worn by farmers, drivers and workmen alike.

This coat is a fine example of the French version. Its collar is mouton, sheepskin processed to look like beaver or seal, and it has the dense, glossy pile that made mouton so popular, shading naturally from honey to deep brown. Left open, it lies across the chest in a broad shawl.

Around it, the canvas has faded softly with age to a warm tan, set off by small details in brown leather. There's no maker's name, just a promise about the leather, which was what mattered most to a Swedish buyer at the time.

Behind that promise was a long tradition. Malung, long known as Sweden's leather capital, had been working skins since the 1600s. For generations its skinnare, the leather merchants, tailors and tanners, walked from village to village making and selling leather clothing in return for lodging and modest pay. Tanneries and factories followed in the late 1800s. Between the two World Wars, a boom in Swedish demand for sports and outdoor clothing turned the trade into a full industry, and by the 1950s and 60s some 150 to 200 leather firms were at work in Malung alone, before cheap imports in the 1970s closed most of them.

The jacket was made for life outdoors in a Swedish winter, and every part of the cut shows it. Four flapped pockets sit on the front, two high under a stitched yoke and two angled low at the hips. The notched collar has a button behind it, so it can be turned up and closed at the throat. A row of buttons runs down the front, a leather belt with a covered buckle draws in the waist, there are epaulettes on the shoulders, and the cuffs close with buttoned tabs. At the back, elastic is gathered into the leather at each side of the waist, so it sits close without a half belt. Across the collar, shoulders, yoke and sleeves, the colour has worn back to a pale sage, clouded and streaked wherever hands, straps and weather touched it most. Under the yoke seams and around the pockets, the original green is still dark and glossy. Green is far less common than black or brown on German jackets of this age, and wear like this can’t be copied. Every mark on it was earned.

You can read in the leather how it was worn. It’s palest across the tops of the shoulders and down the outer sleeves, where weather and daylight hit first. The collar is worn pale from being turned up and handled. But lift the edge of the yoke, or look under the arms, and the green is exactly as it left the workshop.

In Germany this was the everyday leather jacket. It was worn to work and on bicycles and motorbikes, and jackets of this kind were made from the 1930s right through to the 1960s. Every part of the design was there for a reason. The leather is gathered over elastic at the sides and back, so the jacket pulls in at the waist and keeps the wind out without a belt to fiddle with. The hand pockets are cut at an angle, so they’re easy to reach on a bike. They still close with their original MEWA zips, the German pulls stamped with the name, and a man’s hands went in and out of them for years.

The yokes are where the maker showed a bit of personality. They’re pointed front and back like a Western shirt, which is something you rarely see on a German jacket, and a long spear-point collar with double stitching sits above them. Contrast stitching runs along every seam and traces the cut against the green. Inside, it’s lined in warm tan brushed cotton twill, soft to the touch with the diagonal weave showing through where it’s worn, with black sleeve linings and a slim leather-trimmed pocket at the chest, just big enough for papers or a wallet.

The goatskin itself was chrome tanned, the method developed in the 1800s that replaced tree-bark tannins with chromium salts. It was quicker than the old vegetable tanning and gave a soft, supple leather that moved with the body. That made it ideal for clothing, while stiffer veg-tanned hide went into belts, saddlery and luggage. Chrome-tanned leather is a pale grey-blue at its core, and it’s that pale tone you see coming through wherever the green has worn away. It’s part of what gives the patina its colour.

Goatskin was a good choice for a jacket meant for daily use. It’s light and flexible, and tougher than it looks, and the close, pebbled grain softens with age instead of wearing out. Professionally dry cleaned and ready to wear.

Key Features

French corduroy canadienne-style jacket in heavy wide-wale cloth

Shearling collar

Double-breasted front with domed buttons, the carved ones on leather loops

Leather-piped yoke, front and back

Leather-bound slot pockets with leather arrowhead caps

Flapped hip pockets with leather corner reinforcements

Self-cloth belt with steel buckle, carried round the back

Button-tab cuffs

Pleats under the yoke

Thick wool body lining with quilted lower section and smooth-lined sleeves

Size & Fit

All measurements are taken with the garment laid flat.

Chest, armpit to armpit: 25.5 in / 64.8 cm

Shoulders, seam to seam: 25 in / 63.5 cm

Sleeve, shoulder seam to cuff: 23 in / 58.4 cm

Underarm seam to cuff: 17.5 in / 44.5 cm

Back length, base of collar to hem: 33 in / 83.8 cm

Best suited to: a 44" to 46" chest, with room for a jumper or jacket underneath.

Fit: Cut full through the body and shoulders, with a generous chest.

Please go by the measurements above.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0786/2232/7107/files/IMG_8378_25ad2270-f4b8-4acf-b43b-f82197a02a29.jpg?v=1793370343
